  China-Related Research to Support Company’s BI

The Situation

Our client, SAP America, faced the challenge of Chinese data gathering when developing a Business Intelligence (BI) system, which needs to realize the function of outputting each component after inputting a string of characters of Chinese names.

Our client is willing to collect Chinese family names, givens names of single and multi-character with gender metadata, prenames, titles and company names. However, the massive volume of given names, obscure gender indicating, English information lacking and different culture set back the project progress.

The Solution

After an initial research, we found out there are about 10,000 family names and infinite given names for that every character can be used as given name. However, we decided to adopt the solution of gathering 2,000 family names 3,000 single character given names and 2,000 multi-character given names. Because this solution covers more than 90% Chinese population and meet the client’s best needs. The gender is classified into 5 categories of male, female, both, both but usually male and both but usually female to increase the gender judging accuracy.

During the project, we analyzed the influencing factor of age and different culture in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. We also issued a report to illustrate the Chinese names culture and how to address Chinese with their family name, given name, prename and occupational titles.

1. Chinese family name with ranking
2. Chinese given name with gender and meaning
3. Prenames in business and daily environment
4. Occupational titles
5. Large Company Name in Chinese and English

The Result

Our QA staff checked the collecting result for 3 times and delivered the work much before the deadline. Our client is very pleased with the result and report, and highly appreciated our work attitude of always think over the project from their perspective. They also listed our company into their vender database and surely consider us as a competitive cooperation partner in the future.
